The Greater Capital Area Association of REALTORS® (GCAAR) delivered backpacks and school supplies to dozens of children at the Great Hopes Home in Silver Spring on Friday, August 3, 2007 as part of its annual community service efforts. GCAAR also pledged $1,000 for Montgomery Housing Partnership's (MHP) Community Life programs benefiting the children of moderate to low income families.
During a three week period in July, GCAAR collected hundreds of notebooks, pens, backpacks and other school supplies from its 12,000 members. This effort was organized by Geoff Clopton, a REALTOR® for Randall Hagner, on behalf of the association's Community Service Committee and the GCAAR Cares Fund.
"Many families really struggle financially at the start of the school year to buy all the things their children will need," explains Sulema Middleton Stewart, the Director of Montgomery Housing Partnership's Community Life Program. "GCAAR's participation in this program is wonderful. They collected so many supplies that we are able to help some of our other sites in Montgomery County. Their support and generosity is amazing!"
MHP is a non profit that preserves and expands quality affordable housing in Montgomery County. Their goal is to provide high quality affordable housing and offer a broad array of Community Life programs that help families who are striving toward the next level of stability.
This donation continues the work of GCAAR Cares, the community service arm of the association, which works with area charities by providing volunteers and financial support for project-based initiatives. GCAAR Cares has worked with such groups as Rebuilding Together of Montgomery County and Washington, DC, the Montgomery Housing Partnership, and Habitat for Humanity.
